desklampEd Barber and Jay Osgerby have won more design awards than you can shake a stick at (if that means anything).  Their firm designs modern long lasting items that are simple.  We especially enjoy the Tab lamp they thought of.   This one happens to be signed by Barber and Osgerby personally, but if you’re not into that you can just rub off the signature or pick one up here. Something for the home office.  We like it.  $450 BUY

Not many are familiar with Wiesmann motors, but this luxury sports car company based in Dulmen, Germany does something few car companies will.  It makes each sports car by hand.  Wiesmann has a deal with BMW to use its engine and transmissions, but the rest is purely Wiesmann.  The logo is a Gecko, because it “sticks to the road, like geckos to a wall.” Very few on the road, in fact Wiesmann claims less than 300 produced annually.  $250,000  BUY

microfix2Basically an extended version of the Breitling watch, this Personal Locator Beacon will call in the rescue teams anywhere in the world.  When you’re ready to put up the white flag simply flip the antenna up and just hit the red button.  Immediately a personalized coded signal beams into space, to designated COSPAS-SARSAT satelites, telling them where you are, who you are, any pre-set medical conditions, and that you are in a life threatening situation.  Within hours search and rescue, and sometimes the military, will come grab you (at a cost).  U.S. Air Force Rescue Center Approved. $600 BUY

Looking for a personal assistant but don’t have the expendible income to employ one?  We’ve found your solution.  AskSunday is an online company that will outsource your needs, get it done and leave you with a completed checklist.  Some examples of things they will do? Go shopping for your mother’s birthday present, book your flight and have a private car take you to the airport, compile a spreadsheet of bars with private rooms within five miles of you and include costs to rent them out, or the best – have someone wait in line at the DMV for me and call me 10 minutes before it’s my turn.  Makes you wonder…did we write this post or did we have someone do it for us?  Plans start at $17.  BUY

On February 7th this Bugatti type 57S will be actioned in Paris.  The car is expected to go for $5 million.  To put that in perspective, that is how much 16 new Lamborghini Gallardo’s would set you back.  Sixteen.  The odometer on this Bugatti reads just 26,284.  This car has a fairly interesting history.  To say it is rare, might be putting it lightly – the car was custom ordered by the first President of the British Racing Driver’s Club.  The “S” stands for surbaissé – french for “lowered.”  The world will be watching, as it expected to fetch more than any car in history.  The record was set last May by this car, which went for over $10 million.  The expected price was $750,000.  Imagine where that puts this Bugatti.  Go nuts….for a pretty penny.  $TBD BUY

Update:  Sold for $4.52 million.  A steal?  TBD.

Boule PetanqueThe ancient Greeks are the first recorded in history to begin tossing coins as far as they could.  The Romans came along and updated the game by giving it a target.  Today, in the south of France, Petanque is played – with a chilled glass of wine in hand.  Easy to play, simply toss the small ball about 35 yards on clay or grass.  Then alternate trying to toss the big balls as close to the small one as possible.  You can knock others out – and closest gets 1 point.  If you have two closest you get 2 points.  More on the rules here.  Easy enough, and still enjoyed after thousands of years. Polished alloy set of six, comes with canvas carrying case.  $50 BUY
