A new development in medicine has been rushed to the battlefield of Iraq, and is now sold for home use as well. Celox is a blood clotting agent, essentially a granulated version of a bandage. A sterilized powder substance clots blood almost instantly, even in situations of hypothermia. Patent pending, understandably. Stop major bleeding quickly when needed. A small addition to your emergency kit, but state-of-the-art. Be sensible – use as directed. $35 BUY

Cappellini’s Medicine Cabinet was designed by Thomas Ericksson. The flap door is lined with a mirror and it is constructed of laquer metal. The only problem is it was such great design – it is now seen as an art piece, and part of the New York Museum of Modern Art’s permanent collection. The “piece” is from 1992 but the company is still selling them. Does all that justify a $650 pricetag? Depends on your priorities. BUY

Who knew you could wave a wand and filter water. Some major advances in the water filtration department recently. Never taste iodine again, or have to pump a filter when camping. In 48 seconds SteriPen’s Adventurer destroys viruses, bacteria, and common protozoa in 16 ounces of water using ultraviolet light that disables the reproductive DNA of microorganisms. Of course it doesn’t just neuter giardia and the like, it kills them. No need for replacement filters etc. Best of all, just to make you feel better it exceeds U.S. Environmental Protection Agency guidelines for microbiological water purifiers. You can always add it to your emergency kit. Add the solar charger for $40 more. Shine your love light. $94.
